On the night of August 27, 2016, Demetrius Darnell McCloud, 34, was shot in the head from behind on the dance floor at Club Embassy in Virginia Beach during an event featuring rapper Young Jeezy and died at the scene. Video from the club reportedly shows a woman attempting CPR amid the chaos. The club had experienced prior shootings and surrendered its liquor license after this incident, effectively ceasing operations.
Within hours investigators received tips identifying a suspect by the street name Boss Hog, linked to Tobias Kinte Loftin, 37, of Norfolk. Security camera footage allegedly captured Loftin firing the fatal shot and fleeing. Warrants for first-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony were issued; Loftin was arrested after a standoff in Charlotte, North Carolina, on September 20, 2016, extradited to Virginia, tried, convicted in June 2018 of first-degree murder, use of a firearm, and possession of a firearm by a felon, and sentenced to 55 years and fined $45,000.
