In the summer of 2016, 18-year-old Austin G. Baxley of Portsmouth was found dead on the side of Crawford Road in Yorktown just after midnight on July 1. Investigators determined he had suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the head and torso, and the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office opened a homicide investigation.
That investigation led to charges against 20-year-old Julian Rios of Portsmouth after cell phone data placed him on Crawford Road at the time witnesses heard gunshots. Authorities say Rios and 27-year-old Amina Lillian Washington planned the killing for weeks and drove Baxley from Portsmouth to the secluded road on the night of June 30, 2016. A third person, Antionne Hinton, was implicated in helping dispose of the firearms and later pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact to homicide.
Reports indicate the investigation suggested a motive tied to a debt Baxley owed Rios for a cell phone bill. Does anyone have information about Baxley’s life in Portsmouth or memories of that area around late June 2016?
