Jameel Niam Simmons was 26 when he was fatally shot on April 26, 2015, in the 700 block of St. Matthews Square in the Hilltop area of Virginia Beach. The shooting occurred just before 3 a.m. after Simmons went to a woman’s home following texts about money she said he owed and her belief she might be pregnant. The woman had brought another man, Michael Allen Casey, home after they had been drinking at a bar.

Casey answered the door and a struggle followed. Police found Simmons wounded; he was taken to a hospital and died of his injuries.

Casey, 23 at the time, admitted to shooting Simmons and said it was self-defense; investigators reported no evidence Simmons was armed. A jury later convicted Casey of voluntary manslaughter and use of a firearm and recommended eight years.
