On April 13, 2015, police in Portsmouth, Virginia, responded to a home in the 1900 block of Holladay Street and found 39-year-old Emily M. Spence dead of a gunshot wound to her upper torso. Emergency responders arrived about 2:15 p.m., and Spence was pronounced dead at the residence.

Investigators canvassed the neighborhood and appealed to the public for information as they worked to piece together what happened.
