Michael Raymond Bailey Jr. was 22 and working a late shift at the McDonald’s on Nine Mile Road in eastern Henrico County when he stepped outside the restaurant about 11:15 p.m. on Sunday, July 20, 2014, and was shot in the parking lot. He was taken to VCU Medical Center and died of his injuries. In the immediate aftermath employees were told to lock the doors and customers were turned away while officers processed the scene.

Witnesses reported seeing two people running from the area, and detectives released images showing two persons of interest in dark clothing with covered heads and faces; an infrared image later showed the heavier individual with his face uncovered. By early October 2014 authorities had arrested Deonte Maurice Jenkins Jr., charged with first-degree murder and related weapons and mask offenses, and Christopher Pitts, charged with attempted robbery, firearm use and conspiracy—charges that indicate investigators believed robbery was the motive.
