Michael Spann, 22, was killed in a drive-by shooting on June 18, 2007, in Chicago. His death came amid a period of intense violence on the city’s west side and is described as part of broader cycles of gang-related crime affecting the area.

Years earlier Spann was humiliated by Chicago police officers during a 2003 raid on his uncle Robert Smith’s home. Two officers, Tim McDermott and Jerome Finnigan, forced Spann to pose with deer antlers on his head; a photo from that incident later surfaced during an FBI probe into Finnigan’s corrupt unit. Spann’s father, Michael Smith, identified his son in the image by the jogging suit he recognized. Charges against Spann and his uncle were dropped at the time, and the family did not file a complaint then, citing fear of reprisal.

Spann’s father has indicated plans to sue the city over the earlier abuse. Does anyone have further information about Michael’s life or the circumstances of his death?
