On June 22, 2014, 52-year-old Lola Lynn Lowe was found dead of a gunshot wound inside a home on Riverside Road in Chilhowie, Virginia. Smyth County deputies responded after a woman identified as Vickie Ann Morefield placed a 911 call saying she had shot someone and Morefield was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

The case at trial focused on a long-running and hostile family connection between the two women: prosecutors said the shooting was premeditated and grew out of ongoing arguments, while the defense argued Morefield acted in self-defense and described Lowe as the aggressor. The jury convicted Vickie Ann Morefield of first-degree murder and the related firearm count, and she received a 33-year prison sentence.

Anyone who knew Lola’s life in Chilhowie or who witnessed the relationship between the women is asked to share information that could shed further light on the case.
