Susan Lee ’Sue’ Hutson, 58, was found fatally shot at her home on Osborn Avenue in Chesapeake, Virginia, in the early hours of November 29, 2013, the day after Thanksgiving. A longtime Virginia resident originally from Ohio, she loved the outdoors and had served on the Bird Clubs of Virginia. She was a wife and mother of two daughters.
Police quickly focused on one of those daughters, 19-year-old Rachel Lee Hutson, after Rachel called her father to say she had shot her mother and sent him a photograph of Susan’s body. Rachel was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Court records presented that Rachel had been her mother’s caregiver while Susan was ill, and defense filings described Rachel as struggling with severe depression; reports say Rachel had planned to take her own life that morning but instead shot her mother.
Rachel Lee Hutson pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and, at sentencing, received an 18-year prison term; family members spoke in her support and she expressed remorse. Does anyone have information about Susan’s life in Chesapeake or knew the family before 2013?
