Travis Dion Newby, 36, was shot and killed in his Jersey Park Apartments unit on Main Street in Smithfield on the evening of December 19, 2012. According to investigators, Newby discovered an intruder rummaging through his belongings, held the apartment door shut and called police. The intruder escaped by pushing out a window screen and jumping from the unit; a confrontation outside resulted in two gunshots, one striking Newby. He told detectives he did not recognize the assailant and that it was not the person who had robbed him previously.

His girlfriend had planned to tell him that she was pregnant that same night. Authorities later arrested 25-year-old Shymeek Laron Stanfield of Newport News and charged him with murder, conspiracy to commit robbery, attempted robbery and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony; Stanfield was held in the Smithfield Jail pending prosecution. An earlier suspect was released when witnesses declined to testify, and investigators believed up to five people may have been involved.
