Rene Rivera, 36, was shot and killed in Virginia Beach on the night of November 17, 2012. Rivera, a recent transplant to the Lake Edward area who had moved there with his young son to be near family, was returning from a 7-Eleven in his mother’s burgundy minivan when an argument began. He was found in the 600 block of Lake Edward Drive, just across from his home, and was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators focused on a local teenager, Nijel Isaiah Chambers, who was 17 at the time. Police recovered the firearm used in the shooting hidden under Chambers’ bed, wrapped in a shirt and bearing his fingerprint, and the report states Chambers confessed. He was initially charged with first-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and faced adult prosecution; he later pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and received the maximum 10-year prison sentence.
If anyone knew Rivera, saw activity in the Lake Edward neighborhood that night, or has information about the argument at the 7-Eleven, please share what you know.
