On Sunday, March 13, 2011, Buchanan County Sheriff’s Deputy Cameron Neil Justus, 41, was killed in a targeted ambush in the rural community of Vansant, Virginia. Justus was a 10-year veteran of the sheriff’s office and a U.S. Army veteran. Two deputies who first responded to a reported larceny at a car service business were wounded by gunfire from a hidden sniper on a nearby ridge.
Deputy William Stiltner and Deputy Justus arrived to assist and to establish a perimeter; both were fatally shot by fire from a high-powered rifle fired from that ridge. The suspect was later identified as 52-year-old Randy Gilbert Newberry of Vansant. Newberry fled into the woods after the shootings and was later found standing in front of a nearby house talking on a mobile phone. When confronted, he refused commands, drew a handgun, and was shot and killed by law enforcement officers.
If anyone knew Deputy Justus or has information about the events that led up to the shootings, please share what you know.
