On January 19, 2010, 4-year-old Joshua Ty Sipe was among eight people killed in a mass shooting at a home in rural Appomattox, Virginia. Joshua and his sister’s family were living in the house when their 39-year-old uncle, Christopher Bryan Speight, shot and killed Lauralee Sipe, her husband Dwayne Sipe, their 15-year-old daughter Morgan Dobyns and 4-year-old Joshua. Four other people — Jonathan and Karen Quarles, their 15-year-old daughter Emily, and her 16-year-old boyfriend Ronald Bo Scruggs — were also killed.

Speight fled into nearby woods, shot at a police helicopter during an 18-hour manhunt, and surrendered the next morning wearing a bulletproof vest. Authorities found explosive devices at his home that were detonated by a bomb squad. He was later charged with multiple counts including capital murder and attempted capital murder of a police officer. Court proceedings described delusional statements by Speight and a period of incompetency before competency was restored and guilty pleas were entered.

Does anyone have memories of the Appomattox community at the time or information about the victims’ lives to share?
