Brad Harris was 26 when he was killed at his Franklin, Virginia home in the early morning hours of January 23, 2009. A single gunshot fired from outside the Darden Street residence penetrated his bedroom and caused his death, and local investigators pursued leads that reached into North Carolina.
Two men were arrested in connection with the killing and charged with first-degree murder. One of those men, 40-year-old Rockne Butler, was convicted and sentenced to life in prison. After Butler’s conviction, a jailed individual named Jonquil L. Baker said he had heard Butler confess to the murder to a jailhouse barber; Baker’s statement was presented to courts as new evidence. A judge reviewed the claim, questioned the new witness’s credibility, and considered prosecution costs, then denied a motion for a new trial, leaving Butler’s conviction and life sentence in place.
Brad Harris is survived by his parents Emery Wright and Lavern Wade, his daughter Elily, two brothers, and a sister. Does anyone have information about the shooting or remember seeing anything in Franklin on January 23, 2009?
