Erin Nicole Peterson was 18 and a freshman at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University when she was killed on April 16, 2007, in an Intermediate French class in Norris Hall. A Centreville, Virginia native majoring in International Studies, she had graduated from Westfield High School where she belonged to the National Honor Society and captained the women’s basketball team.
Erin was among 32 victims of a campus gunman identified as 23-year-old student Seung-Hui Cho, who carried out shootings in two campus locations before dying by a self-inflicted wound. Cho chained the doors of the Norris Hall classroom; Erin and ten classmates, plus their professor, were among those murdered there.
Erin’s parents, Grafton and Celeste Peterson, later sued the university and the commonwealth claiming officials should have issued a campus-wide alert after an earlier dormitory shooting. A circuit court initially ruled for them, but the Virginia Supreme Court overturned that verdict, finding the commonwealth had no duty to warn. Does anyone have memories of Erin or details about her life on campus to share?
