On the late afternoon of May 8, 2006, Master Police Officer Michael E. Garbarino, 53, was shot while seated in his patrol car in the parking lot of the Sully District Police Station in Chantilly, Virginia. A gunman, identified in reports as an 18-year-old who had driven a recently carjacked van into the lot, opened fire with an AK-47. Officer Garbarino was struck five times and managed to radio a warning to colleagues to remain inside the station before being taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital.
Detective Vicky Armel, who engaged the suspect in the parking lot, was also fatally wounded. Responding officers returned fire and killed the attacker at the scene. The assailant had been arrested two weeks earlier on a separate carjacking and was found to be heavily armed at the station attack. Officer Garbarino died of his wounds on May 17, 2006, after nine days in hospital; he was a 23-year veteran of the Fairfax County Police Department, survived by his wife, two children, his parents, and a brother.
Does anyone have memories of Officer Garbarino or information about the events that day that could add context to the timeline?
