On April 19, 2002, Ronda W. Robinson, 23 and six months pregnant, was shot to death inside her home on Sussex Street in Lynchburg, Virginia. Her husband, Anthony Robinson, was also shot and killed; both children were in the house and hid in a closet while the killings occurred. Police were called after a report of forced entry at the rear of the house and found Anthony at the bottom of the stairs with eight gunshot wounds and Ronda in an upstairs bedroom with eight gunshot wounds. The medical examiner determined the wounds were inflicted while both victims were alive.
Six days later Leon Jermain Winston was arrested. His DNA was found on the murder weapon, and the Robinsons’ 8-year-old daughter identified him as present at the scene. Winston admitted involvement in an attempted robbery but said an accomplice committed the shootings. A Lynchburg jury convicted him of capital murder in 2004 and recommended death, but that sentence was later overturned on the basis of an IQ score of 66; after appeals he received three life terms without parole. Ronda’s family chose not to pursue further death-penalty proceedings to avoid prolonging their suffering.
If anyone knew Ronda, Anthony, or has information about the events that night, please share what you know.
