On January 16, 2002, a shooting at the Appalachian School of Law in Grundy, Virginia, left three people dead and several students critically injured. Lewis Anthony Sutin, 42, the law school’s dean and a former senior official in the U.S. Department of Justice who joined the faculty in 1999, was one of the victims. Associate Professor Thomas Blackwell and student Angela Dales were also killed.

Reports say the shooter, 43-year-old former student Peter Odighizuwa, shot Sutin and Blackwell execution-style in their offices. Odighizuwa was subdued by students and taken into custody by local police; he was later charged with multiple counts of capital murder and related offenses. Investigators noted Odighizuwa had a history of mental health issues, which was cited as a factor in the attack.
