Sixteen-year-old Tara Rose Munsey, a Radford, Virginia high school sophomore, disappeared after working an afternoon shift at a local Taco Bell on January 25, 2000. She planned to meet her father and brother at a basketball game that night but never arrived. Her father found her car in the restaurant parking lot unlocked with her hat and some food inside; her keys and purse were missing.
More than two weeks later, on February 10, hikers found Tara’s body at the bottom of a 70-foot ravine near Parrott, Virginia. An autopsy showed she had been shot three times in the head and once in the chest at close range. She had blood under her fingernails, was naked from the waist up, and a footprint was found on a shirt located nearby.
Investigators focused on 30-year-old Jeffrey Allen Thomas, an acquaintance who sometimes had Tara babysit for his daughter. Witnesses reported Tara had been with Thomas and friends earlier that day. A woman reported Thomas confessed and gave nonpublic details; DNA matching Thomas was found on Tara’s body, clothing, and under her nails. A shoe print on the shirt matched athletic shoes found in his car, and a .22 caliber shell casing near the body was linked to a rifle he had borrowed. Thomas was arrested and charged with capital murder and later convicted.
Does anyone have information about Tara’s last known movements or the gathering she attended that afternoon?
