Sergeant Ricky Lee Timbrook was 32 and on patrol in Winchester, Virginia, on October 29, 1999, when he engaged in a foot pursuit near East Piccadilly Street and East Lane. The chase moved into an alley where the suspect, Edward Nathaniel Bell, turned and fired a single shot from a .38 caliber handgun that struck Timbrook in the forehead. Timbrook was taken to a hospital and died of his wounds about 30 minutes later.
Bell, who had been arrested by Timbrook in 1997 on a firearms violation, was found hiding in a nearby basement several hours after the shooting and was taken into custody. He was charged with capital murder and, after a seven-day trial, was found guilty on January 25, 2001. The prosecution introduced testimony that Bell had expressed animosity toward Timbrook and had said he would shoot the officer in the head if they met again.
Does anyone have additional information about Timbrook’s service in Winchester or about the investigation that followed?
