Saba Tekle was a 33-year-old Ethiopian immigrant and mother of three who was killed outside her apartment in Annandale, Virginia. On October 13, 1989, a 17-year-old assailant followed her from a highway to the 6900 block of King Louis Drive. At gunpoint he forced her to partially undress; when she ran up the stairs he shot her in the upper back with a .38-caliber handgun. The bullet pierced her jugular vein and she died from the wound.

The attacker, Dwight A. Wright, carried out this attack as part of a five-day shooting spree that included two other victims shot in Prince George’s County, one of whom later died. Wright was arrested, tried as an adult in Fairfax County Circuit Court, and in November 1991 was found guilty of two counts of capital murder related to Tekle’s killing and an attempted rape, plus armed robbery, attempted rape, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. The jury concluded he posed a future danger and imposed the death penalty for the capital convictions, along with additional prison terms for the other counts.

Did anyone who knew Saba Tekle or her family live in Annandale at the time and remember that night or the weeks before it?
