On May 13, 1983, Graham W. Adkins, 75, and his wife Myra C. Adkins, 77, were murdered in their home on Route 609 in Charles City, Virginia. Smoke was seen coming from the house that day; a neighbor forced entry to investigate and found Graham near the door. He and two others removed his body, but fire and smoke prevented further rescue.
Medical and scene evidence reported that Graham died of a single close-range gunshot to the face from a .25 caliber pistol and that his clothing was soaked with gasoline and kerosene after death. Myra had been tied, gagged, shot in the face, subjected to multiple assaults, placed in a closet, and died of smoke inhalation after the fire was set.
Authorities identified and arrested a man named Willie Leroy Jones, who was known to the couple and had a close friendship with Mrs. Adkins. Jones was charged with two counts of capital murder related to robberies and multiple killings, convicted on both counts, and sentenced to death. Did anyone in the Charles City area at the time have information about the Adkinses or their acquaintances that might shed further light on these events?
