Shortly after midnight on Friday, May 16, 1975, gunfire was reported in the 200 block of 10th Street in Virginia Beach. Officers found 20-year-old Joseph J. Kelly suffering from a gunshot wound; he was taken to Virginia Beach General Hospital and died of his injuries. Kelly was serving in the U.S. Navy and was stationed at Dam Neck Naval Base at the time.

Investigators identified a vehicle of interest: a yellow 1972 or 1973 Chevrolet with large whitewalls that was seen in the area and reportedly occupied by two Black males. The motive for the shooting has never been determined, no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been announced. The Virginia Beach Police Department continues to list the case as an open investigation.

If anyone has information about that night, the yellow Chevrolet, or persons who were in the 200 block of 10th Street in the early hours of May 16, 1975, please contact investigators.
