Jerry Gray, 66, of Anderson, Indiana, was found dead inside his West 27th Street residence on December 6, 2022, prompting a homicide investigation. Authorities say Gray had met 34-year-old Jacob Fite at a liquor store earlier that day and the two went to Gray’s home to continue drinking. An altercation followed; Fite told investigators the fight began when Gray tried to stab him with a cheap bayonet and that he struck Gray in the nose. After a short lull they talked, but Fite later said Gray picked up a second Vietnam-era bayonet and that Fite knocked him unconscious, a blow that proved fatal.
After the death, Fite called his brother-in-law to pick him up and reportedly asked for help moving Gray’s body; instead the relative contacted police and Fite was arrested. He was charged with aggravated battery and involuntary manslaughter, later pleaded to involuntary manslaughter, and was sentenced to five and a half years in prison. Does anyone have additional details about Gray’s life in Anderson or the events that led up to that December night?
