Nicholas Folkerth Lakes, 33, was shot dead inside a residence on North I Street in Richmond, Indiana, on November 12, 2022. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene after he suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

Court documents say the incident began when a man, later identified as 39-year-old Earl Juston Ray, entered the house wearing a red outfit and mask and demanded drugs and money. When Lakes said he had nothing to give, the intruder allegedly opened fire. A second person, Erica Nicole Petry, is reported to have been at the scene, masked and armed with a handgun. Ray and Petry were later arrested and charged with murder, burglary resulting in serious bodily injury, and attempted robbery; both were held in the Wayne County jail without bond.
