Monica Vaught, 49, died after being shot by four Greenwood officers on March 29, 2022, following a traffic pursuit that began with a report of a possible drunk driver. Officers say she was driving the wrong way, struck a utility pole, fled, and then drove into the Greenwood Police Department parking lot where her vehicle struck a patrol car. Brandon Cox fired and she was pronounced dead at the scene. A toxicology report showed high levels of methamphetamine, amphetamine, and cannabinoids.
Internal review by the Greenwood Police Department and the Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office concluded the officers acted lawfully, and they returned to duty. Vaught’s family filed a tort claim and later sued the city and the officers, alleging excessive and unreasonable force; that lawsuit was settled for an undisclosed amount. Her children have spoken about her academic achievements, time teaching English in Taiwan, and her struggles with mental health and substance abuse.
Are there details about the final moments or subsequent reviews that anyone with knowledge of the case can add?
