Caleb Cowden, a 29-year-old White man, was found dead in a southside Bloomington apartment after an evening shooting on February 8, 2022. His body was discovered the next day wrapped in blankets and bound with rope inside a bedroom; an autopsy found a single gunshot wound to the forehead as the cause of death.
Police entered the apartment in the 900 block of Graham Place after a tip and found Gary William O’Bryant asleep on a living-room couch. Officers found traces of blood on the floor, blood-soaked clothing in trash bags, and a Glock 9mm magazine loaded with bullets. Three witnesses at the apartment told investigators the shooting occurred during a methamphetamine deal, that they heard a gunshot from a bedroom, and that O’Bryant came out of the room and made an incriminating statement; they then found Cowden in a pool of blood.
O’Bryant was arrested on felony charges including murder and drug offenses; he later entered a plea that resulted in a guilty but mentally ill plea to possession of methamphetamine and a 14-year prison sentence. Does anyone have additional observations about the timeline in the apartment that night or about witnesses who were present?
