Olivia Arinna Carrillo, 26, was killed by gunfire at a residence on South Illinois Street in South Bend, Indiana, on April 27, 2021. Another 26-year-old, Jalen Cullen, was wounded in the same shooting and survived; Carrillo’s young son was in an adjacent room when the violence occurred.
Investigators determined the incident began with a drug deal that turned into a robbery. Court documents say Dashawn Powell Jr. arranged to buy marijuana from Cullen, went to the home where Carrillo and Cullen were, and initiated an armed robbery. A struggle over Powell’s gun allegedly led to it discharging, and additional shots were fired from outside the house as Powell fled.
In October 2023 Dashawn Powell Jr. was arrested and charged with murder, robbery, and aiding, inducing or causing murder in connection with Carrillo’s death. During the later trial, Cullen—who had been granted immunity—testified about the transaction and how it escalated into the deadly confrontation.
