On the night of August 31, 2020, in Lafayette, Indiana, 37-year-old delivery driver and father Joshua L. Ungersma responded to a dispatch to the 1900 block of North 16th Street. Ungersma, who also worked as a butcher at a Payless Supermarket and had taken a second job to support his family after the birth of a son, was led to an abandoned house as part of a setup intended to lure a driver for robbery.

According to witnesses, 19-year-old Alberto Vanmeter confronted Ungersma and attempted to rob him at gunpoint. Ungersma, possessing a valid permit to carry, drew his revolver and shot Vanmeter, killing him. While Ungersma was calling for help and explaining he had been targeted, 17-year-old Jaelynn Billups — positioned across the street — fired a 9mm handgun and fatally shot Ungersma. Officers found Billups at the scene; she discarded the weapon when ordered to show her hands and was detained. Investigation concluded Billups and Vanmeter conspired to commit the robbery, and Billups faced charges including murder and felony murder.

A jury later convicted Billups on counts including murder, felony murder, armed robbery, and theft, and she received a 50-year prison sentence. Does anyone have additional details about the setup used to lure the driver or about the house on North 16th Street?
