Alexis M. Wasson was 29 and eight months pregnant with twins when she was shot in the back of the head in Anderson, Indiana, on August 2, 2019. She was taken to a hospital in Indianapolis and placed on life support; her injuries were later declared unsurvivable. The twin boys she was carrying also died in the days after the shooting. Wasson died on August 10, 2019.

Police investigators focused on Wasson’s 29-year-old boyfriend, Skye’lar De’andre White. He did not call 911, instead driving Wasson and her 5-year-old daughter to his mother’s house in the middle of the night, waking his mother and asking her to take Wasson to the hospital, then fleeing on foot. White told his mother the shooting was accidental, saying a gun in the bed unintentionally discharged and grazed Wasson’s head, but officers recovered a spent 9mm shell casing behind the bed’s headboard.

White was arrested and charged; after the unborn twins died the case was updated to include two counts of feticide and murder. He later pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and one count of feticide and received a 30-year prison sentence plus 10 years probation.
