Tyler L. Winfrey was 17 and a 12th grader at Richmond High School when he died on February 18, 2019, in an apartment in the 2100 block of Grand Boulevard, Richmond, Indiana. He was active with Second Chance Ministries Church and the Jeffers Boys and Girls Club, where he served as a mentor, and had plans for culinary school and possible military service. Family and community remembered him for a giant, caring heart, a forgiving nature and a love of basketball.
Authorities say the shooting was reported that afternoon by a 17-year-old who called 911 and told the operator he had removed the magazine from a gun, believed it to be safe, and that the firearm discharged, fatally striking Winfrey. The caller left the apartment, went to another residence a few blocks away to wait for police, and was taken into custody and later charged with reckless homicide. The suspect’s name was not released.
Does anyone from Richmond remember Tyler or have information about that afternoon?
