On November 18, 2018, 18-year-old Jontae Billups-Brooks was fatally shot at an apartment on Rubble Way in Lafayette, Indiana. Officers answered a report of multiple shots fired at 4:32 a.m.; Jontae was found with a gunshot wound, taken to a local hospital, and later pronounced deceased.
Investigators learned a second victim was Jontae’s brother, Keyonte Billups-Brooks, who had also been shot and briefly left the scene. He was located shortly afterward and treated at a hospital before being released. Police identified 20-year-old Alexander Garcia-Johnson as a person of interest and said they did not believe the shooting was random.
That evening the Lafayette Police Department’s Street Crimes Unit arrested Alexander Garcia-Johnson in the 300 block of Cheshire Drive; he was booked into the Tippecanoe County Jail and initially charged with being a serious violent felon in possession of a handgun. The homicide investigation remained ongoing. Does anyone have information about Jontae, Keyonte, or the events that night?
