On October 7, 2018, at about 5:20 a.m., 40-year-old Tomara Agnew of South Bend was shot and killed during a verbal altercation at the Anderson Apartments. The man identified as the shooter was Anthony Patton Jr., the boyfriend of Tomara’s daughter. Patton fired multiple shots, striking Tomara three times; she was pronounced dead at the scene.

After the shooting Patton attempted to flee in an SUV. Officers who tried to stop the vehicle came under fire; they returned fire. Patton initially evaded capture after disappearing near Bulla, prompting a search in the River Park neighborhood. Authorities described the 23-year-old as armed and dangerous and released his description to the public. Family members said the argument was related to domestic disputes.

Patton was later apprehended, charged with murder and related offenses, and admitted to shooting Tomara twice in the chest during the argument. The case underscores the deadly consequences of domestic violence and the loss suffered by Tomara’s family. Did anyone in the area see or hear anything that morning that could shed more light on what happened?
