Donita Elliott, 47, was shot to death in her Lafayette, Indiana, home on August 8, 2017. Her husband, Patrick Elliott, initially told police she had come at him with a knife, and officers had been to the residence hours earlier and left after believing the situation had de-escalated and that Donita had left.
Investigators later found an audio recording on Patrick Elliott’s cell phone that captured the moments before, during and after the shooting. The recording contains Donita’s final pleas for help and Patrick’s response that he would only help after watching her die. The recording contradicted his claim of being attacked with a knife and showed he had planted the knife after the shooting.
Patrick Elliott was arrested and charged with murder. At trial the prosecution presented the audio as evidence of a premeditated killing; the jury convicted him of murder and false informing on July 18, 2019, and he received a 75-year sentence. Is there anyone who knew Donita or the Elliotts who can shed light on what led to that night?
