In the summer of 2017, 27-year-old Cody Klotz of Lowell, Indiana, was killed after confronting a man who was dating his former fiancée. The incident began with a dispute that had been conducted in heated Snapchat messages and culminated when Klotz went to the other man’s residence on July 15, 2017.
Charles Bayne, then 21, had armed himself and waited outside his home. When Klotz arrived an altercation ensued and Bayne fired a single shot that struck Klotz in the chest. Klotz died at the scene; an autopsy attributed the cause of death to exsanguination from the gunshot wound.
Bayne was arrested and initially charged with murder; his defense argued he acted in self-defense under Indiana’s Stand Your Ground law. The jury convicted him of voluntary manslaughter. For readers who knew Cody or witnessed events that night, any information could be important.
