On a Wednesday evening in Salem, Indiana, two young men from Louisville, Kentucky were found on the side of the road with multiple gunshot wounds. One victim, 18-year-old Marty Jay Patterson III, was shot so many times his body was described as being covered with bullet wounds; he was taken to Saint Vincent Salem Hospital and pronounced dead. His 19-year-old companion was critically injured and flown to University Hospital for emergency treatment, and detectives were working with the surviving victim to ensure his safety.
Indiana State Police investigators concluded at least one shooter fled the scene and noted no vehicles were found nearby, suggesting the victims had been brought to that stretch of the Salem Bypass between State Road 60 and State Road 135. Authorities said they did not believe there was a broader threat, but the motive remained unknown and no suspects had been identified in the initial reports.
Was anyone in the area that night who saw or heard something that could help piece together what happened?
