Bonnie L. Franks, 73, was found dead in her Muncie, Indiana, home on Thursday morning, June 30, 2016. Neighbors remember her as a friendly homemaker who rode her bicycle through the neighborhood and served as a neighborhood mom. Her husband James had died the year before; she is survived by a son, Richard, and a daughter, Cindy.
Police responded after a 911 call placed by her 42-year-old son, Richard Franks, who initially claimed his girlfriend Amy Campbell had shot his mother during a struggle over a shotgun. Officers located Bonnie Franks deceased on the floor with a shotgun nearby. Under questioning, Richard first gave other accounts but later confessed that an argument with his mother escalated, he retrieved and loaded a shotgun from a bedroom, and he shot her after she threatened to call his sister. Neighbors and friends described Richard as having volatile behavior that had reportedly worsened in recent years.
Does anyone who knew Bonnie or the family have details that could shed light on Richard’s state of mind in the days before June 30, 2016?
