On March 4, 2015, Anthony Santura Smith, a 34-year-old Black man, was shot dead after forcibly entering his ex-girlfriend’s apartment in Speedway, Indiana. The woman was inside with her two young children when she fired a single shot that struck Smith in the head; he was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead by medics. The Marion County Coroner ruled the cause of death a gunshot wound.

Investigators reported a history of domestic disturbances between Smith and the woman, including previous police calls and an August incident in which she said Smith chased her on a motorcycle, sent threatening texts, threatened to kill her and her children, and had broken a window to get into her apartment. Smith was under community corrections monitoring as part of a 13-year sentence for a 2012 narcotics dealing conviction. Authorities indicated they did not expect to file charges against the shooter, concluding she appeared to have used justifiable force to protect herself and her children.

Did anyone in Speedway at the time witness the March 4 entry or the prior threats against Smith’s ex-girlfriend?
