In the early morning of Tuesday, November 4, 2014, 59-year-old Dwight Jones was found inside his pickup truck on Edgerton Street in Laurel, Indiana, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital but died of his injuries and was pronounced dead on November 5, 2014.

Franklin County Sheriff’s deputies arrested 61-year-old Bertram Rayburn Jr. of Laurel in connection with Jones’s death; Rayburn was later charged with murder and criminal recklessness and pleaded not guilty in December 2014. Another man, Gary Boyer Jr., was questioned as a possible suspect. Court documents say the shooting may have followed a night of heavy drinking and arguing involving the victim and the alleged shooter.
