On the morning of December 11, 1998, Goshen, Indiana lost Patrolman Thomas Edward Goodwin, 31, a U.S. Army veteran and eight-year member of the Goshen Police Department. Goodwin was securing a crime scene at the Brookside Manor Mobile Home Park near Pebblebrook and Poplar drives when a 20-year-old man emerged and opened fire with a rifle. Goodwin was struck in the head and died at the scene.
The shooter retreated into a nearby trailer, prompting a multi-hour standoff with law enforcement. A SWAT team used tear gas; the suspect eventually surrendered. The suspect was later transferred to Logansport State Hospital in early 1999 for a mental competency evaluation and was convicted of murder and sentenced to life without parole.
If anyone was in the Brookside Manor area that morning or has information about events leading up to the shooting, please share what you know.
