Anthony Santi, 41, was fatally shot on October 6, 2022, after intervening in a dispute at a gas station and convenience store on U.S. 40 Highway in Independence, Missouri. According to reports, a customer, Ja’Von L. Taylor, 23, argued with a clerk inside the store and Santi stepped in. The confrontation moved into the parking lot, where Taylor retrieved a Glock .40-caliber handgun with an extended magazine from his vehicle.
A physical struggle over the gun followed; Santi put Taylor in a headlock. A female passenger then exited Taylor’s vehicle, took the firearm and fired a single shot that struck Santi in the back. Santi released Taylor, walked back into the store and collapsed; he died from the gunshot wound. Surveillance footage and witness statements were reviewed by investigators.
The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office declined to file murder charges against the woman who fired, citing Missouri’s stand your ground law and concluding prosecutors could not disprove that she acted to defend another person. Taylor was later arrested and faced federal prosecution for being a felon in possession of a firearm and for possessing a converted fully automatic weapon.
Does anyone have additional information about Santi’s actions that day or remembered the scene at the U.S. 40 gas station?
