On the night of April 5, 2022, a confrontation at the Snappy Mart/14-Junction Truck Stop on U.S. Highway 63 North in West Plains, Missouri, ended with 34-year-old James Harlan Vineyard shot and later pronounced dead at Ozarks Healthcare at 11:42 p.m. Officers responding just before 11:00 p.m. found Vineyard at the entrance of the business with multiple gunshot wounds.
Surveillance footage and witness interviews show Vineyard was engaged in a physical struggle with Garrett T. Harbin when Vineyard reportedly produced a knife. The shooter was identified as 22-year-old Damian Paul Henry of West Plains, who was taken into custody soon after and admitted firing his weapon, saying he acted in defense of Harbin. Henry was charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action; a search of his vehicle produced drugs that led to additional felony delivery charges against both Henry and Harbin.
The case proceeded to trial, and on January 14, 2023, a jury found Damian Henry not guilty of the murder and armed criminal action charges, accepting that he had acted to protect another person during the altercation. If anyone witnessed the fight at the truck stop or has additional information about that night, please share what is known.
