On the evening of May 24, 2017, the Kansas City, Missouri, community was shaken by the fatal shooting of 28-year-old Antonio Cecil-Delayne Hughes, a Black male who was a lifelong resident of the area. Police officers were dispatched to the 5700 block of Bales Avenue around 7:16 p.m. after receiving reports of gunshots fired in the neighborhood. Upon their arrival, they were directed to the rear of a residence where they discovered Hughes suffering from apparent gunshot trauma.
