On the cold evening of New Year's Eve in 2013, a sense of finality hung in the air for 26-year-old Brent A. Richards. At approximately 11 p.m., the sound of gunfire shattered the night in the 4200 block of Woodland Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri. Responding to a call of an unknown nature, police officers arrived to find Brent lying on the sidewalk, grievously wounded by at least one gunshot.
Paramedics rushed the young man to a nearby hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
