In the early morning hours of April 23, 1901, a tragic event unfolded in Joplin, Missouri, that resulted in the death of 27-year-old Patrolman James Sweeney. Sweeney, a male officer with the Joplin Police Department, was involved in the arrest of a group of seven men described as vagrants in the Kansas City Railroad yards.
