Kelvin KJ Jackett Sr., aged 51, tragically lost his life on October 17, 2022, in Corona, CA. The incident occurred during a violent altercation at his home in Eastvale, a nearby community. The confrontation involved his son, Kelvin Jackett Jr., who was 31 years old at the time. Jackett Jr., who had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar tendencies, was living with his father, mother, and younger brother. On the night of the incident, Jackett Sr.
became concerned about his son's erratic behavior and the disappearance of one of the three handguns he kept in the house. He instructed his younger son to stay in his room and handed him a revolver for protection.
The situation escalated when Jackett Sr. confronted his eldest son, leading to a physical struggle. During the altercation, Jackett Jr. managed to gain control of a 9mm pistol and shot his father in the abdomen. Despite being wounded, Jackett Sr. attempted to subdue his son. In the midst of the struggle, Jackett Jr. tried to shoot his father in the head, but the gun jammed. Jackett Sr. then called out to his younger son to shoot his brother, which he did, firing multiple rounds into Jackett Jr.'s face and chest. Jackett Sr. was subsequently taken to a regional trauma center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Following the incident, Jackett Jr. was arrested and charged with murder. However, under a plea agreement with the Riverside County District Attorney's Office, he later pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter. In exchange for his plea, the murder charge was dropped. Jackett Jr. was sentenced to 15 years in state prison. The younger son, who shot his brother in defense of his father, was not charged with any offense related to the shooting. The case highlighted the tragic consequences of untreated mental illness and the complexities of familial relationships under extreme stress.
