Robert Chavez, aged 36, tragically lost his life on August 14, 2022, in Perris, California. The incident occurred shortly before 1 a.m. when Chavez was involved in a confrontation with two other men. During this altercation, Jonathan Manriquez, a 23-year-old probationer from Lake Elsinore, allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired multiple rounds. Chavez was killed instantly, while the other two men sustained serious injuries but survived.
The Riverside County Sheriff's Department responded to the scene and initiated an investigation that quickly identified Manriquez as the primary suspect.
Manriquez was apprehended the following day at Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar, where he was seeking treatment for undisclosed injuries. He was charged with murder, two counts of firearm assault, and additional sentence-enhancing allegations related to the use of a firearm and causing great bodily injury. Initially held on $2 million bail, Manriquez faced a series of legal proceedings.
In September 2023, Manriquez pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and admitted to one sentence-enhancing allegation of using a firearm. As part of a plea deal, other charges and sentence-enhancing allegations were dismissed. He was sentenced to nine years in prison. The two other victims, identified only as "F.M." and "S.C." in court documents, were recovering from their injuries.
The case highlights the swift action of law enforcement in identifying and apprehending the suspect, as well as the legal processes that followed to bring some measure of justice to the victims and their families.
