Jorge David Alvarado Jr., a 30-year-old police officer from Salinas, California, tragically lost his life on February 25, 2022. Alvarado was conducting a routine traffic stop near the intersection of Griffin Street and East Market Street when the driver of the vehicle, Gustavo Morales, immediately exited his car and opened fire on Alvarado before he could even exit his cruiser. Alvarado, a dedicated officer and U.S.
Army veteran, fought valiantly until his final breath, managing to fire two shots, one of which struck Morales in the hand. Despite his efforts, Alvarado succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The incident sent shockwaves through the Salinas community and the law enforcement fraternity. Alvarado was remembered as a warrior who never backed down from a challenge. His funeral procession saw hundreds of law enforcement and fire department vehicles paying tribute, with community members lining the streets to honor his sacrifice. Gustavo Morales, the suspect in Alvarado's murder, was quickly apprehended and faced multiple charges. Morales, who had a prior conviction for domestic violence and was prohibited from owning a firearm, was found guilty of first-degree murder, shooting at an occupied motor vehicle, assault on a peace officer with a semiautomatic firearm, unlawful firearm possession, and carrying a loaded firearm. During the trial, Morales testified that he acted out of fear, believing that Alvarado would shoot him if he saw the loaded 9mm handgun in his car. However, the jury found his actions to be premeditated and deliberate.
In November 2023, Morales was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
