Andre Carrol, a 30-year-old resident of El Cajon, California, tragically lost his life on August 25, 2021. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning when El Cajon police officers responded to reports of a shooting near Sandalwood Drive and Mollison Avenue. Upon arrival, they found Carrol suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, Carrol succumbed to his injuries shortly after.
The investigation into Carrol's death quickly led to the
identification and arrest of Chantell Tompkins, a 36-year-old resident of San Diego. Witnesses at the scene described seeing a suspect fleeing in a box truck, which was later spotted by police on Interstate 8 near the I-15 interchange. A coordinated effort between El Cajon and San Diego police resulted in a felony stop of the vehicle, leading to Tompkins' arrest. He was subsequently charged with murder and booked into jail. Authorities confirmed that there were no other suspects involved in the case at that time.
The legal proceedings following Tompkins' arrest were extensive. In August 2024, nearly three years after the incident, Tompkins was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to 75 years to life in prison. The court proceedings revealed that Carrol's murder had a ripple effect, leading to a retaliatory shooting less than a week later. On August 30, 2021, Arthur Williams, an associate of Tompkins, was fatally shot while sitting in his vehicle in the Mount Hope neighborhood. This second shooting was linked to Anthony Goodrich Austin, who was arrested in March 2022. Austin was later convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The case of Andre Carrol's murder highlights the tragic consequences of violence and the far-reaching impact it can have on communities. The swift actions of law enforcement and the subsequent legal outcomes demonstrate a commitment to justice for the victims and their families.
