Anthony Barajas, a 19-year-old TikTok star, tragically passed away on July 31, 2021, after being shot during a movie screening at the Regal Edwards Theatre in Corona, California. Barajas and his friend, Rylee Goodrich, were attending a late-night showing of "The Forever Purge" on July 26, 2021, when they were both shot in the head. Goodrich was pronounced dead at the scene, while Barajas was placed on life support and succumbed to his injuries five days later.
The incident shocked the community and Barajas' large online following, as he was known for his engaging content and positive presence on social media.
The suspect, Joseph Jimenez, was arrested shortly after the shooting. Jimenez, 20 at the time, was charged with murder, attempted murder, and robbery. Prosecutors later added a special circumstance murder charge, making him eligible for the death penalty. The investigation revealed that the shooting appeared to be random and unprovoked, with no known connection between Jimenez and the victims. During a search of Jimenez's home, authorities found a handgun matching the caliber of the weapon used in the shooting.
Jimenez's trial was a significant event, with emotional testimonies from the victims' families. Despite claims from Jimenez's defense that he was suffering from schizophrenia and heard voices that led to the shooting, the judge ruled that he was sane at the time of the crime. In February 2024, Jimenez was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The sentencing brought some closure to the families of Barajas and Goodrich, who expressed their grief and the impact of the loss on their lives. Barajas' family has since focused on preserving his legacy through acts of kindness and a foundation in his name.
