Justice Boldin, a 28-year-old valet worker, tragically lost his life on April 22, 2021, in a mass shooting incident in San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter. Boldin was working at the Pendry Hotel when he was shot and killed by Travis Sarreshteh, a 34-year-old man who went on a shooting spree that evening. Boldin, remembered by friends and family as a kind and joyful individual with dreams of becoming an airline pilot, was the first victim in this senseless act of violence.
Sarreshteh, armed with an unserialized "ghost gun," shot Boldin once in the chest and then three more times after he collapsed. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, as Sarreshteh did not exchange any words with Boldin before opening fire.
Following the initial shooting, Sarreshteh continued his rampage, injuring four other individuals in separate incidents nearby. He was eventually detained by bystanders and arrested by the police. The case against Sarreshteh proceeded swiftly, with a San Diego jury convicting him of first-degree murder for Boldin's death, as well as multiple counts of attempted murder and assault with a semi-automatic firearm for the other victims. During the trial, Sarreshteh's defense attorney argued that the police had apprehended the wrong man, but the jury found him guilty based on the evidence presented.
In January 2023, Sarreshteh was sentenced to multiple life terms in prison, plus an additional 175 years to life. At the sentencing hearing, members of Boldin's family, including his mother and sisters, delivered emotional statements, expressing their grief and the profound impact of losing Justice. They described Boldin as a beloved family member who brought joy and courage to their lives. The court's decision to impose the maximum possible sentence was a small measure of justice for the family, who continue to mourn the loss of a young man taken too soon.
